Passenger 21: the secret Japan of José Juan Tablada

Pasajero 21. El Japón de Tablada

July 21, 2019 – October 12, 2019

Before Japonisme was a trend, the Mexican poet José Juan Tablada was already collecting prints, spreading Japanese culture and writing haiku in Spanish. Passenger 21 brings to light that little-known side: Tablada as collector and promoter of Japanese art in Mexico. The show gathers nearly ninety works, among them prints by Hiroshige and a caricature of Tablada himself on a lotus flower by Miguel Covarrubias. It is a delightful crossing of two cultures. With ArtGuide you discover the bridges Tablada built between Mexico and Japan.
