Emiliano: Zapata after Zapata, a century of a contested image

Few Mexican figures have been portrayed—and contested—as much as Emiliano Zapata. As part of the Year of the Caudillo of the South, Bellas Artes gathered a century of depictions of the agrarian leader, from muralism to photography and from Diego Rivera’s studies to contemporary art. The show does not celebrate an untouched myth: it reveals how each era reinvented Zapata according to its own battles, between the State that appropriates him and the movements that raise him as a banner.
