The China Galleon: when Mexican Baroque was painted with Asian eyes
Exposición temporal La NAO de China y el Barroco en México
November 30, 2016 – December 30, 2016
For centuries the Manila Galleon linked Asia and America across the Pacific, and Mexico was the hinge of that exchange. At the Museo Franz Mayer, this show explores how the China Galleon steeped New Spain’s Baroque in silks, lacquers, folding screens and Asian motifs. Among the pieces is a screen depicting the battles of Alexander Farnese, a perfect example of that visual mestizaje. It is a story of globalization before the word existed. With ArtGuide you follow the trade routes that changed the way people looked.
